Distance Therapy

Also known as “telehealth,” “virtual sessions,” or “online therapy,” it has so many benefits…

The privacy of being able to do it in your own home…

… reduces the stigma that some people have about going to therapy sessions.

Clients may be very private about their personal lives and may not want others to know they are getting therapy. They are reacting to the public’s negative beliefs about mental health disorders.

Some may have been brought up in a culture that has influenced them to feel that way themselves. This, in turn, might promote their belief that someone may see them walking into a therapist’s office and would shame or embarrass them.

Although mental health stigma has decreased over recent years, it is still not uncommon for people to be reluctant to take their first step to an in-person therapy session. Therapy from home reduces that uneasiness.

Attending an online teletherapy session can feel less intimidating. Sometimes having that distance between the client and the therapist helps them feel less vulnerable, too.

Also, if you are in a private room of your home where you are comfortable, safe, alone, and uninterrupted, it can be the epitome of privacy during the session.

If you’re feeling less anxiety around privacy, this security will help you focus and participate more effectively in the session.

The results are comparable to in-person sessions…

Research has shown this to be true. The obvious difference is the distance and screens between us. However, it is like a Zoom interaction with your family or friends, which most of us are currently quite familiar with. We will interact to get to know each other without interruptions.

Introductions will be the same as they would in an in-person session.

I will ask you questions. You will discuss what is on your mind, and I will respond in kind. At times, I will reflect and perhaps ask for clarification to assure I understand.

I want you to know that I am totally focused on you and listening. We will make eye contact during the session. The processing will be similar. I will provide appropriate listening, paraphrasing, and challenging.

You can still talk openly, show emotions, and process. We will agree on a therapeutic plan and set/meet goals. Therapy still feels safe, and the connection between client and therapist still happens.

It can help people get counseling who might not otherwise be able…

Distance therapy works well if you are in a more rural area, and there are few services near you. Or maybe you live in another county of this large state, and my office is not within driving distance for you.

If you are homebound for any reason, like health issues or even under social distance restrictions as many of us have been, distance therapy is a viable option for you. In a sense, I come to you.

It’s economical and convenient…

Distance therapy is great for many reasons. Yes, it can help people get counseling that may not otherwise get it. But there are other benefits. Not only does it save money on gas, imagine the time and energy saved by not driving in this Florida traffic, trying to find a parking space, and walking in this scorching heat!

When you take part in a virtual session at home, you eliminate all of that! And if you’re a busy, hard-working person or someone without child-care, you can get a teletherapy session during non-work hours easier than getting a regular session – lots of significant benefits here.

To help with availability and scheduling, I accommodate later evening appointments during the week.

It’s SO EASY! Here’s all you’ll need…

Along with a private, uninterrupted space in your home, you will need an electronic device with video capabilities, such as a laptop, tablet, or smartphone. If you’re using your smartphone, it can be done via cellular. However, a high-speed Wi-Fi/Internet connection is optimum. It is best if your device is stabilized/stationary.

Remember, a private setting, away from strangers and family, and a quiet background are necessary. When I send you a link, click on it at the time of our scheduled session. That’s all. I love it because I am not limited to helping those in my immediate area, but I can serve Florida’s entire state. Pretty awesome!

Teletherapy may be just what you need.

You’ve thought about it long enough. Teletherapy seems like something you can easily integrate into your schedule. It feels a little less intimidating.
